BP has agreed to plead guilty to 14 criminal counts, including manslaughter, and will pay $4 billion over five years in a settlement with the Justice Department over the April 20, 2010, drilling disaster in the Gulf of Mexico that killed 11 and unleashed the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history, officials announced Thursday.
the gulf disaster of 2010. and the justice department wants to insist this is the biggest fine. whatever. what a bunch of s**t. and that's not going to change anything.
as ronald d. white (los angeles times) points out:
British oil giant BP can easily afford to pay the $4.5 billion in oil-spill settlement costs announced Thursday, but analysts said a more difficult task may be rebuilding its reputation.
BP agreed to the fines and other payments to the federal government and others and pleaded guilty to 11 felony counts related to the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico that killed 11 workers in April 2010. It also agreed to a misdemeanor count under the Clean Water Act, a misdemeanor count under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and a felony count of obstruction of Congress.
that's a drop in the bucket for b.p. more money was spent dealing (and continuing to deal) with the disaster than b.p. is being fined and don't forget that 11 people died.
so b.p. gets a slap on the wrist and that's it.
as white points out in another article:
In the third quarter alone, BP raked in sales of more than $93 billion and had a net profit of more than $5.2 billion. That was a result that showed that “BP has made the most remarkable comeback from the most costly industrial accident in history,” said Fadel Gheit, senior energy analyst at Oppenheimer and Co., in a note to investors.
disgusting. they should have been fined a trillion dollars minimum.
until it hurts these corporations, they will continue to destroy the environment and risk these minor fines.
it's our earth. we only have 1. b.p. destroyed it and basically tossed four dimes at us after they did.
let's close with c.i.'s 'Iraq snapshot:'
