thursday night, 'scandal' returned on abc. the series stars kerry washington as olivia pope, a p.r. fixer that the powerful rush to when they've got a scandal breaking, hence the title. olivia has a group of people who work for her at her firm. in addition, she and the president of the united states (tony goldwyn) have fallen in love. this week, they're still on the outs.
we learned on the last episode - 2 weeks ago! they made us wait 2 weeks! - that they met on his presidential campaign and she was able to make him and his wife come off as a real couple. and then we learned so much more. especially at the end where olivia, the first lady, cyrus (white house chief of staff) and another man (oil?) met up and they were part of some conspiracy involving the president - all of them.
gloria e-mailed friday to say she gave the show a chance and really enjoyed it: 'I hate the title though. I thought this was a show about a tabloid.' that's funny because i kept confusing it with courtney cox's 'dirt'
i don't know that the show's a bad title. it may just not have been promoted right. but last season, c.i. kept asking me, 'have you checked out "scandal" yet?' and i would say no and have some excuse. then she mailed me the show on dvd a little while back, the 1st season and i stopped making excuses and watched it expecting nothing. it was so good.
and all the more so now that we know the long story: the conspiracy.
this episode the president was in japan. it was called 'all roads lead to fitz.' but fitz wasn't on. the point was that nothing could distract from fitz' japan talk. millie, the 1st lady, was told by cyrus that she she doesn't talk to the press or make announcements when the president is out of the country because it steals focus. the press includes cyrus' partner who went back to work this episode. that's made cyrus mad but it's his fault for refusing to adopt a baby like his partner wanted.
the supreme court judge that is olivia's friend has cancer. the meeting continued in flashbacks. the oil man said they could sit there all day 'twisting my nipples' or could get focused. they were talking about the murder the oil man ordered of a reporter (who was sleeping with quinn who works for olivia) and of the woman who claimed she was pregnant with the president's baby (she lied). a lot of what they discussed will probably make sense later on. but a lot of it was over our heads right now. the point appeared to be millie can't be part of murder. oil man said they all signed on to this when they did their plan.
what was their plan?
who knows but we found out that they stole the election.
fitz didn't win.
olivia had a new client this week. a governor called her. she and her team arrived at his house where a man was dead. he had shot the man dead. he told them the man was raping his wife.
olivia did a quick glance and said the wife showering did not help nor did the booze. later abby found hairs and was able to find them all over the house.
so they figured out that the governor's wife was having an affair, she wasn't raped.
and the wife admitted it and the governor was horrified. do they tell the truth or risk the police not finding out? the publicity was making the governor a hero to many.
but the wife told olivia that before he lost the election, the governor was a man of hope.
we find out that olivia was able to take him down by 10% points in the last 4 weeks of the election. and then he only lost by something like 4,000 votes.
olivia is helping this man because she feels she destroyed him when they fixed the election.
she should have stayed away from him.
she discovers he knew about the affair and confronts him. he says he went into the bedroom planning to kill his wife, her lover and then take his own life. he had nothing to live for. but then his wife said the 'magic word': rape. that's when he saw a way out of it.
he tells olivia that she can't expose him because it will destroy her own reputation, she tells him she'll ensure that he pays in other ways.
let me go to abby. she's the red head.
i didn't really like her until this episode.
in the 1st season, she seemed smart and capable. but then co-worker quinn becomes client quinn and the team learns that olivia hired this woman who is a cypher - never existed before. and olivia won't let them dig. so olivia's protecting quinn for some reason. that's when she became distrustful of olivia.
now it makes sense and abby seems like a prophet.
but since that point last season, she's repeatedly questioned olivia, questioned the cases they're taking, etc. and i don't mean to a friend or lover (she's now sleeping with some 1 in the d.a.'s office - he used to be olivia's friend until the quinn case, he won the case and then, at the last minute, the trial was fixed as he knows it was). she would do it in meeting after meeting. olivia would be laying out the plan and she'd stop and question it. she just became a real drag.
so she's sleeping with the d.a. guy and she's the 1 who spots the hair at the governor's mansion and figures out the affair. and she spots huck's computer.
huck is part of olivia's team. there's quinn, abby, stephen, columbus and huck. huck is called 'huck finn.' what's his real name? who knows? we know olivia met him right before going to work on the campaign that elected fitz. he was homeless. she may have known his past. we're led to believe she didn't but that was before we knew about the conspiracy.
huck worked for the c.i.a. he tortured, he killed and did other things. we know that it destroyed him and that's how he ended up homeless.
huck has been doing ops for olivia. he tortured another ex-c.i.a. to find out where the body of the woman who claimed to have been carrying the president's baby was, for example.
huck was supposed to set up a dead end trail for the d.a. guy. olivia was worried the d.a. would keep snooping. i don't think huck knows how olivia fixed the court. but she was set to lose and quinn to go to prison and she made a call to some 1 and the next day the judge tossed the case instead of putting quinn away for murder. (quinn was innocent of murder. her boyfriend the journalist was killed on the orders of the conspiracy.)
so huck's got a date. a woman in his 12-step group. and this is big news because he's really a loner to the extreme. (he has chemistry with quinn but i don't think the producers have noticed that yet.) so columbus is helping him and they need a woman's opinion, columbus decides, so he calls abby over.
she offers input on something but is mainly staring at the computer screen.
no 1 knows abby is sleeping with d.a. guy. and she's staring at the screen and sees a thing about a 3:00 pm meeting. that was her lover's meeting. where he was told by a source that there was no story there, quit digging.
so abby ends up going to him and telling him she can't tell him how but that the meeting yesterday was a fake and he's been misled, there must be something there.
we cut to a man listening in. the d.a. guy's place is bugged. olivia's informed and, at the meeting we saw in flashbacks, she basically said that she wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty (with murder) so at the end of the episode when a grim olivia says she'll take care of it, it has dire implications.
it was a really great episode.
if like gloria and me, the title had distracted you or put you off, ignore the title and make a point to watch the show on thursdays or stream it abc. i think you'll love it.
let's close with c.i.'s 'Iraq snapshot:'
