'revenge' is back next wednesday! do not forget it, abc.
okay, 'community' aired on nbc last night.
it was a much, much better episode than the previous week.
this episode revolved around brita's ex-boyfriend being in the area and her wanting to see him even though she knew he was bad for her.
she gave annie her phone and annie was no help. giving it back the 1st time brita asks. but at least annie swapped the ex's number with her own. so when brita started texting him from the bedroom, annie, avid and troy were able to text back pretending to be him.
then brita started calling and they didn't know what to do. they had to answer because annie hadn't changed her voice mail (so if it went to voice mail, brita would hear annie's voice) and she hadn't set it not to go to voice mail (to just keep ringing).
so after they pretended to be the man on the phone, they then texted her that she was told never to call him at work. and then, as brita goes more & more desperate, they offer a weak text which finally turns her off.
brita wanted what she couldn't have. when he was no longer running, she didn't want it.
is it chan or chang?
anyway, he was with pierce (chevy chase) and that allowed chevy some really nice moments.
shirley teamed up with jeff and she's really the only 1 that works with jeff other than brita. both of them can stand their ground with jeff.
shirley and jeff went to the carnival to check out blade. that is brita's ex. jeff becomes obsessed with him - he wants what he can't have just like brita - and shirley points that out to him. she's seen what she needs to see. jeff, by contrast, spends 200 dollars at blade's booth just trying to figure him out.
this episode worked because it focused on the core strength: avid, troy and brita.
they make the show. if you sideline them, you're in trouble.
it also gave really nice moments for pierce and shirley.
and even the dean got to hang out though you tended to forget him unless some 1 was asking why he was even present.
last week, 'community' got the worst rating. was it the least amount of viewers since it came back on a few weeks back? it's worst for the season?
i couldn't tell by the reports.
i checked wikipedia and, at 3.0, 'pillows and blankets' is the lowest rated episode of the show ever.
that's this season, the 2nd season, the 3rd season.
'whitney' by contrast, never had an episode that low when it was on thursday nights and didn't have any episodes that low when it moved to wednesday nights and it finished its first season with a finale that had 4.09 in the ratings.
'community' was taken off by nbc after the december 8th episode (3.60 rating). it returned on march 15th with its highest rated episode of the season 4.75.
however what happened next should upset fans of the show.
march 22nd it dropped from 4.75 to 3.87
march 29th it dropped to 3.48
april 5th it dropped to 3.00
april 12th it 'rose' to 3.09.
were i nbc, 'whitney' would be an easy renewal because it delivered on thursdays and wednesdays. and on wednesdays, it started the night and delivered. it delivered so well that it started the night with the network's highest ratings. each half hour saw the network get lower and lower ratings. meaning whitney brings its own audience. you can plug that show in on various nights and it will deliver.
by contrast, 'community' fans bitched and moaned when 'community' got taken off. they created a false battle between 'whitney' and 'community.' 'community' wasn't dropped because 'whitney grabbed' it's spot. it was dropped to allow '30 rock' to return. ('whitney' got swapped with 'up all night' which is how it ended up on wednesdays and 'up all night' ended up on thursdays.)
but 'community' fans wanted to make the comparison. so now it's out there. and the reality is that 'whitney' delivered all season long and 'community' can't.
the 1st episode back got the biggest ratings of the season and that's clearly a result only of the non-stop whining about poor 'community' by the fans - that clearly created curiosity.
but then people watched and didn't like it. so less and less watched each week.
the 1st season, 'community' regularly got 5.somethings in the ratings.
season 2 saw 5.01 kick off with the 1st episode and then the ratings drop and drop until the season finale gets 3.32.
again, when the comparison was being made, was fresh, last december and january, i told 'community' fans - check my achives - to stop comparing it to 'whitney.' i also stressed that c.i. said nbc would be bringing the show back in the spring.
but 'community' fans didn't know how to listen.
so they chose to compare it to the most attacked show of the season. and the reality is that even with all those attacks, 'whitney' still delivered better ratings and a larger audience than did 'community.' they never should have made the comparison but having stressed it over and over, you can be sure it's the comparison nbc will be considering when they decide whether to bring 'community' back for a 4th season. (and let's note that each season of the show has seen lower and lower ratings.)
i would argue that 'community' fans should ahve compared their show to '30 rock.' that show gets all the press attention and non-stop commercials. but it's ratings are not considerably better than the ratings for 'community.' i think you can successfully argue that when 'community' returned to thursday nights in march, it got higher ratings each week (including this week) than did '30 rock.' i think you can argue it performed much better.
let's close with c.i.'s 'Iraq snapshot:'
