The vehicle, loaded with the most-sophisticated instruments ever used to explore another world, is scheduled to touch down Aug. 6 at about 1:30 a.m. New York time. If successful, the $2.5 billion mission is expected by scientists to return a trove of data on the geology of a planet that’s been shrouded in myth.
the landing is scheduled for sunday. and have you heard about curiousity? the los angeles times reports:
Curiosity, a roving lab that will scour Mars for the ingredients of life, is scheduled to land at 10:31 PDT Sunday in an ancient geological feature known as the Gale Crater. It is a complex operation. At 1,982 pounds, Curiosity is five times heavier than previous Mars rovers. Its landing requires a dizzying sequence of pyrotechnics and on-the-fly adjustment, all done automatically because Mars is 154 million miles away, too far for the swift communication needed to guide the landing from Earth.
On Thursday, scientists revealed that Curiosity has already delivered results, even before it lands.
Curiosity's instruments are expected to yield a new understanding of Mars' history and environment. The mission's impact doesn't end there, however. Curiosity is also expected to pave the way for future Mars missions, including the first human exploration. President Obama has set a goal of sending an astronaut to Mars by the 2030s.
afp notes that india's planning to do a mars mission next year. some may argue that india prompted the race to mars.
i think it was the remake of 'total recall' which opened today.
okay, i'm joking but i did want to mention the movie and this allows me too.
a lot of people hated the 1st film. some of those felt the martian woman with the 3 breasts was just too much and sexist.
a lot of people also loved the original. you can put me on that list. i thought, for example, that sharon stone was wonderful as ahnuld's wife (no spoilers). i also thought it was a good popcorn movie.
now it's been remade with colin farrell who always seems like he just hopped out of bed with demi moore and ashton. doesn't he?
well he needs a hit. bad.
he was a flavor of the month very briefly. and then he was in 1 bomb after another.
with that in mind, i had to see the film. i also believe (possibly wrongly) that colin and i are more politically sympatcio than ahnuld and i were. so i was really hoping that 'small wonder' colin would be as good in the film as ahnuld and that the film would be as good as well.
i'm not doing spoilers on opening night. but i will say:
i loved the film! i think it's better than the origianl and a large part of the credit for that goes to colin and kate beckinsdale.
if you liked the 1st 1, go see this 1 because it's incredible.
let's close with c.i.'s 'Iraq snapshot:'
