'community' airs on nbc thursdays currently. in january, it's yanked from the schedule (c.i. says nbc expects to return it to the air by march if not sooner. you'll see why in january.)
the most recent episode was the best episode of the season. it's been a lousy season so far, so maybe i should up that. thursday's episode was such a strong episode that were nbc to do a dvd of the 5 best episodes of the show, it could easily make the cut.
the whole thing was a take on 'hearts of darkness: a filmkaer's apocalpse.' and it worked as a spoof but it worked as more than a spoof as well which is why it was an episode worth watching.
the dean was making the 1st commercial for greendale community college in 16 years - pierce informs us the old commercial still airs late night during 'fantasy island' marathons. he wants the study group (the most diverse 1 on campus, he notes, except for lack of hispanics) to star in it.
the 1st problem is when pierce demands catering and when that's denied he says he'll be in his trailer until catering arrives. but he doesn't have a trailer, he's informed.
he rents his own and refuses to leave it.
the dean casts jeff as himself. jeff thinks he can ensure that he won't actually make the commercial. but when he's finally tossed off the set, he goes protesting. with 2 weeks-plus on a 1 day shoot, jeff and many others are too invested in the commercial. that includes annie who is the script supervisor and convinces herself the dean is a geinus (because otherwise all of her time will have been wasted, she confesses). the dean wants shirley to be 'sassy' (he can't think of the word and shirley says she hopes he doesn't figure it out or there will be a problem), he wants brita and troy to hug - but in a way that acknowledges a 400-year-old wound, he insists. they spend forever on that scene with the dean never satisified and ignoring annie when she says it's time to move on. annie expresses confusion as the shoot goes on. for example, there are 2 men standing there in diapers and the script only calls for 1. the man with the mustache explains he's not an actor, he's just visiting the dean.
avid makes a film of the whole thing unwinding, of the crazy.
chang is jeff's understudy.
at the end, after the dean has cracked and the board is going to see the commercial, avid has secretly edited the thing so they don't hit the roof and actually like what they saw. it's good, they tell him. no, better. 'it's good enough.'
the dean realizes how crazy he became and goes to tell the gang he's sorry. it's a group hug after the dean rests his head on jeff's chest. and they gather around to hug. then every 1 starts to walk off and avid notices that brita and troy are still hugging.
so we get the long running element there, a spoof, a chance for the actors to deepen their characters and a lot of laughs. the best episode of the season so far.
let's close with c.i.'s 'Iraq snapshot:'
