The scandal over air traffic controllers falling asleep on the job illustrates the dangerous conditions at US airports almost 30 years after Pres. Ronald Reagan crushed the strike by PATCO (Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization), which workers waged to preserve safety and working conditions. The scandal has revealed that major airports today rely on single controllers to direct traffic in overnight shifts.
In response, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) chief Hank Krakowski on Thursday submitted his resignation, and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced that 27 airports would receive an additional overnight air traffic controller.
Shortly after midnight on March 23, American Airlines flight 1012 from Miami and United Airlines flight 628 from Chicago each requested permission to land at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, which handles some 18 million passengers per year and is located near high priority national security sites including the White House, the Capitol building and the Pentagon. After repeated attempts to signal the control tower, the flights were forced to land unassisted. No one was hurt among the some 165 passengers and crew on the two flights.
It has since come to light that there were four known incidents of lone air traffic controllers sleeping on the job in 2010. This week air traffic controllers were found asleep at airports in Knoxville, Tennessee; Reno, Nevada; and Seattle, Washington.
i've fixed the run together aspect of the post but that's about all i can do. i keep trying to take the bold out of the below but can't. sorry.
read the whole article. last night brothers & sisters was on with a new episode.
kitty wasn't on.
which was just as well. there was so much going on as it was.
sarah and luke had a fight. she thought it was because she cleaned up his art
studio hours before his big show. nope. he was upset that she was selling the
house - which he considered their home. my big thing here? when did luke go from
underwear model to painter?
justin. actually interesting in a scene with kevin and several with beau bridges.
but let's jump to sally field's norah. they're playing celebrity - sally and beau
and justin and kevin. and justin and kevin are a little too salty for her taste
and when beau leaves she tells them and they tell her beau loves her. she doesn't
justin finds beau in the kitchen sweating and breathing heavy. he's afraid it's a
heart attack but beau says he's just played the game too hard and ate too heavy and
he had an exam at st. luke's last week, he's fine. key point, remember that.
sally wakes up on the road with beau in his mobile home. she'd gone out there to
talk to him and fallen asleep and now they were headed somewhere for a baseball
game. they go there and norah catches a foul ball and beau tells her he's taking a
job with this team and he wants her to go with him. she'll tell sarah (at luke's
show) that it felt like a proposal.
justin mentions to his paramedic partner that he's worried about beau's health.
time to steal some medical records. justin will object but will look. beau was
just having a panic attack. but. uh. oh. you know this don't you?
beau may be sarah's father after all. justin confronts him because beau said he
was type o but he's b like the later mr. walker (norah's husband). why did he
lie? years ago, walker asked him to tell sally field he was type o.
and he just did?
beau says yes because sally was already married to the guy.
justin says he has to tell sally.
he might have meant to. but they meet in her kitchen, she tells him she will go
with him and invites him up to her bedroom. they sleep together for the 1st time.
early morning, he goes to justin, tells justin he's leaving. tells him to promise
not to tell his mother about the blood type. (justin really didn't promise) and he
splits. justin finds sally crying because she found a note from beau telling her
kevin and scotty? scotty bumps into his friend who tried to be a surrogate for
kevin and scotty but had a miscarriage. she doesn't want to speak to scotty,
doesn't want to look him in the eye.
you know where this is going, right?
they finally catch her at the airport and are shocked to see her with a young child
whom they decide may be the child she agreed to have for them but say she
again, a whole lot went on last night.
let's close with c.i.'s 'iraq snapshot:'
