that was my question to ruth who is furiously typing up a post?
she didn't so i will.
when i was little and the thin man movies would come on tv, my favorite character was asta.
asta is nick and nora charles' dog. when asta was in the shot, i was happy.
and i wanted a dog like asta. and as i got older, i wished i were nora charles - leading the exciting life, with the witty comebacks and the gorgeous wardrobe and the husband who loves her.
after college (and after my 1st divorce), i had a little 12-inch black & white tv. and i would put it up on the chester drawers in the bedroom (it was portable and had a handle). i would open the windows, turn out all the lights and pop some pop corn for those special times when they were showing the nick & nora charles movies.
myrna loy plays nora charles and i would love to tell you that i've seen everything she's ever done. that's not true. she's done some better work in other films and some worse work. but for me, she's always nora charles. the movies were made in the 30s and 40s and they've got a really crisp black and white to them. color films have come a long way but i still don't believe that they can compete - in terms of mood and perspective - with the best in black and white.
then again, i paid to see ed wood (tim burton film) at the movies and that was johnny depp. it should have been packed. i was 1 of 3 people in the whole theater opening night. (ed wood, a 90s film, was shot in black and white.)
but movies like the maltese falcon and the big sleep - to name 2 more - just have a gorgeous look to them.
let's close with c.i.'s 'Iraq snapshot:'
